Cavs Foolish to Pursue Stoudemire

Memories sure can be short sometimes.

Shaquille O'Neal and Amare Stoudemire together was a disaster in Phoenix, so why would Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry possibly think it would work in Cleveland? So they could jam together at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Don't do it, Danny Boy.

Ferry is a sharp young executive, so we'll assume he comes to his senses quickly. But if he delivers this deal, it might be the last move he makes in Cleveland because it could cost him his job when the Cavs plummet in the playoffs.

There is such an important thing called chemistry, and Ferry would be foolish to mess it up now -- with the Cavs on a 13-game winning streak -- and it's something that's sure to happen with Stoudemire.

If the goal is to reach the NBA Finals for the much-anticipated date with the Lakers, it's not Stoudemire who would get them there. It's that other deal with Washington for Antawn Jamison that would make it happen.

The Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard, defending Eastern Conference champs, probably would enjoy seeing Stoudemire in Cleveland, helping them clog the lane against LeBron James.

What the Magic fear is Jamison and the way he would open up the court even more with his better outside shooting. His skill set would be ideal for the Cavs.

Also, the personality difference between Jamison and Stoudemire is big. One would fit well with James and Shaq. The other would not.

Remember what happened when the Suns added O'Neal in the middle of the 2007-08 season, thinking it was the key to reaching the Finals? They got blitzed by the Spurs, 4-1, in the first round of the playoffs.

They didn't even make the playoffs last season. Although Stoudemire missed the final 29 games with a detached retina, they weren't very good before he left, struggling just to land one of the final two playoff positions. They were just 7-8 in the 15 games before Stoudemire left the side of Shaq.

When the Cavs lost to the Magic last spring in the conference finals, they wisely decided to add O'Neal, knowing he could prevent Howard from dominating in the post. Although O'Neal is merely a shell of his former self physically, he knows how to win better than anyone, proven by his four NBA titles.

He also knows how get into Howard's head, which is why he has orchestrated the silly "Who's the Real Superman?'' debate.

The Cleveland/Orlando Eastern rematch this spring would be a good one, a good lead-in for the Lakers/Cavs final that everyone expected a year ago.

If the Cavs were not playing so well, it's understandable why they would be thinking seriously about adding Stoudemire, figuring they could re-sign him as a free agent this summer when they let go of O'Neal.

To trade for him now -- with everyone going go well -- would be a glaring mistake, messing up the delicate chemistry the Cavs have working. O'Neal already has won his titles, and he's happy to play sidekick for James. Stoudemire is at a different stage of his career, still wanting more respect.

Putting him between James and O'Neal in the frontcourt sounds nice on the surface, and it would add more star power. But it's not what the Cavs need.
