Powerade is deadset on leaving no stones unturned in its bid to break away from the ranks of the league’s whipping boys.
The overhaul continues for the Tigers, who have been languishing in the bottom half of the standings in the recent past.
Assured of blue-chip players with the No. 1 and No. 4 overall picks in the 2011 Rookie Draft, the Bo Perasol-mentored squad also added promising young talents in Josh Vanlandingham and Dour Kramer in a trade with Rain or Shine.
In exchange, Powerade shipped veteran forwards JR Quinahan and Norman Gonzales, as well as its 2013 second round draft pick that was originally from Shopinas.com and its own 2014 second round selection.
In Vanlandingham, Powerade got a spot-up shooter who can drain those bucket from long range and could very well play backup to the prolific Gary David. Kramer is a tenacious inside operator who may be a tad shorter than his counterparts, but more than makes up for it with hard work on both ends of the floor.
The high Draft picks this year, which could well turn out to be JV Casio and another Smart-Gilas standout or the highly-touted Paul Lee, plus the acquisition of Valandingham and Kramer has sent a strong message to the league that a new Powerade squad will show up when the 37th PBA Season opens on October 2.
With fresher legs and more eagle-eyed snipers, the Tigers are expected to metamorphose into a more up-tempo squad which should offset its lack of ceiling with its speed and uncanny shooting.
The retooling may just have begun for Powerade as its think tank continues its search for the right chemistry.
Imports who can be an intimidating presence in the lane will likewise be a big boost in the second and third conferences.
The Tigers should have more reasons to smile this coming season.
