Letran tries to finish off what it started as the Knights go for the upset victory over San Sebastian Wednesday in their knockout match for the second finals berth in the 87th NCAA men's basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Knights, facing the Stags for the second consecutive time at 4 p.m., is on the verge of eliminating their second-seed tormentor in the first round to arrange a title showdown with defending champion San Beda Red Lions next week.
Letran, which finished third after the elimination round, is one win away from shoving San Sebastian's twice-to-beat advantage out the door in the Final Four following a 70-62 win in the first game of the semifinal series Monday.
With a finals seat on the line, the Knights will not leave anything behind as it goes for its first finals appearance since 2007 when they were swept by San Beda that season.
"We don't have any momentum and we all know San Sebastian's character. We have to play the same amount of intensity we had last Monday and play like there's no tomorrow," said Letran coach Louie Alas.
The Stags are avoiding a monumental meltdown having lost their third consecutive game after a 15-0 start to the season. They are playing their fourth game in two weeks but Alas said that fatigue won't be a factor to a top class team like San Sebastian.
"With the quality of players that San Sebastian has, I think fatigue will only come to them after the season. We are not taking any chances," said Alas.
In the first game of the series, Jam Cortes and Kevin Alas posted expected numbers but pint-sized point guard Mark Cruz came out of nowhere chipping in eight of his 12 points in the fourth period.
Calvin Abueva led the Stags with 19 points but spent more time on the bench due to foul trouble.
In the 2 p.m. first game, Letrans high school team, the Squires, also seek a finals berth when they take on College of Saint Benilde-La Salle Greenhills.
The Squires finished the elimination round in second place with a 14-4 record to secure a first-round bye in the stepladder playoff.
Letran will take on a dangerous Greenies side that beat Emilio Aguinaldo College, 88-74, in the first stepladder playoff game last Monday.
