San Beda tries to slam the door shut on San Sebastian's title hopes on Wednesday as the Red Lions go for the sweep against the Golden Stags in Game Two of the 87th NCAA men's basketball finals at the Araneta Coliseum.
San Sebastian is determined to bounce back and send the game into a deciding Game Three. San Beda, meanwhile, aims to complete its celebration after a 75-63 Game One win.
"I want the guys to be happy but not to happy because we haven't win Game 2. Let's get the second win and let's all get crazy," said San Beda coach Frankie Lim, who is trying to win for the Red Lions their fifth title in the last six seasons.
Game 2 is set at 12 noon.
Lim expects an even more physical Game 2 since the Stags will go all out to avoid the sweep.
"We'll be ready and we won’t back down. If they want to play physical, so be it. We just have to play to win," said Lim.
San Beda relied on Mar Villahermosa's hot shooting and the inside presence of Dave Marcelo and Jake Pascual to take Game One.
Villahermosa tallied 15 points on 3-of-4shooting from three-point range while Marcelo and Pascual scored 14 each while combining for 13 rebounds and five blocks in defending the Calvin Abueva-led San Sebastian frontline.
Despite the loss, San Sebastian coach Topex Robinson remains optimistic about their chances for Game Two amid some emotional moments in the series opener.
"I guess they outhustled and outworked us in the game," said Robinson. "They wanted it so badly more than we do. But what's good about this is that we are going to be back and be ready for whatever they throw at us."
Robinson also noted the play of their reserves led by Lyle Antipuesto, who tallied 11 points as a starter.
"The starters won't win it for us without the second group. We still need to play as a team and win as a team," said Robinson.
Robinson was critical about the officiating in Game 1 and was even ejected in the fourth quarter.
"We just have to fight it off," Robinson said.
Abueva, who was named the season Most Valuable Player, tallied 12 points and 16 rebounds. He, however, was silent in the fourth with only two points.
