THE King Archer who made the big hits for De La Salle decades ago is back to help the new breed of Archers make their mark.

Zandro “Jun” Limpot, the Green Archers’ main man in the late 1980s, is now part of the staff of newly appointed head coach Gee Abanilla, who is hard-pressed to deliver in the post-Pumaren era of La Salle basketball.

Abanilla and co. have been handling the team for a month now, including the three-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Most Valuable Player Limpot.

“Gee was my teammate at La Salle and he wanted me to teach the big men of the team, to develop their skills,” said Limpot, who was part of the 1989 and 1990 champion team in the UAAP.

“I’m happy to serve my alma mater again at masaya rin ako at nakabalik ako sa first love ko, which is basketball,” he added.

The 39-year-old was a top pick of the now-disbanded Sta. Lucia Realty in 1993 and played 14 seasons in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He won his only PBA title with Purefoods (now B-meg) in 2006.

Limpot is now helping Abanilla in rebuilding the Green Archers, who finished a dismal sixth in the current UAAP season that led to the resignation of coach Dindo Pumaren.

The Archers saw action in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League as part of their “rebuilding” process. They were eliminated by the Letran Knights, 61-66, in the quarterfinals.

“Assessment lang ang ginagawa muna namin sa players because we’ve been practising for only three weeks,” said Limpot.

The six-foot-six forward’s special assignment is to hone big men Arnold Van Opstal and Norbert Torres.

Limpot said the team will go full blast in its training next year and added that their target is to make a splash in the 75th season of the UAAP.

“Rebuilding pa ang team ngayon. Siguro two years pa, puwede na.”

Former Green Archers Juno Sauler and Tyrone Bautista are also part of the coaching staff.
