For maybe the final time in college basketball, two of Cebu’s prized giants Junmar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter collide on the court.
Fajardo’s University of Cebu Webmasters defeated Southwestern University, 63-58, Wednesday night to emerge as the Southern Islands champion in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League National Championship at the Ormoc Superdome.
With the win, UC earned a trip in the Final Four where they will face PCCL defending champion Ateneo, NCAA titlist San Beda and Luzon-Metro Manila titlist San Sebastian College in a round-robin tournament starting on Monday at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Webmasters’ win also set up a Final Four opening game blockbuster match against UAAP champion Ateneo on Monday at 2 p.m. with the two behemoths in Fajardo and Slaughter serving as a sidebar in this match-up.
The six-foot-nine Fajardo and the seven-foot Slaughter were frequent rivals when the latter was still playing for University of Visayas in CESAFI before becoming one of the key elements in Ateneo’s fourth straight conquest in the UAAP this season.
They will play against each other in collegiate basketball for the last time, unless both teams advance to the PCCL finals, since Fajardo is set to play for the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League after the tournament.
The Stags, meanwhile, clinched a seat in the Final Four by defeating fellow NCAA team Letran College, 83-76, in the Luzon-Metro Manila bracket of the tournament.
The Knights, playing minus top player Kevin Alas and head coach Louie Alas, had a 47-34 halftime lead before the Stags came storming back to take the victory.
San Sebastian will open its Final Four bid against San Beda on Monday, 4 p.m. in a rematch of the NCAA Season 87 finals won by the Red Lions.
The top two teams in the Final Four meet in the championship with the top-seeded team holding a twice-to-beat advantage.
