The much-anticipated tiff between Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter and University of Cebu’s Junmar Fajardo became a Slaughter and Nico Salva show.
Slaughter had 14 of his 18 points in the first half and Salva, the UAAP finals Most Valuable Player, posted 13 of his 18 points in the third quarter as Ateneo thrashed UC, 100-53, Monday in the PCCL National Championship semifinals at the Fil Oil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Slaughter-Fajardo match-up was an afterthought when the Blue Eagles showed their might over the Webmasters to take their first win in the round-robin final four tournament.
Thanks to torrid shooting from the field, the Blue Eagles romped to a 28-10 lead in the first quarter then closed out the first half with an 11-0 run with Fajardo sitting on the bench.
Fajardo only played 14 minutes because of an injured right knee and was sitting on the bench for most of the second half when the game’s outcome had already been decided.
“We got off to a good start. I thought that we played well defensively but I never thought that we will play this well offensively,” said Ateneo coach Norman Black in his first game back with the school after leading the Sinag Pilipinas national to the gold medal in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.
The game looked very similar to the SEA Games as the Blue Eagles limited the Webmasters to nine points in the third for an 82-39 advantage entering the fourth.
The lead reached 51 points on a lay-up by JP Erram near the end of the match.
Fajardo had 12 points, nine rebounds and a steal but made an impact in the limited minutes he saw action.
There was a juncture when Fajardo and Slaughter, his former tormentor in the CESAFI league in Cebu, were exchanging baskets in the second period.
“From what I’ve saw, he is nursing an injury that’s why he didn’t play that much in the game. I figured they are saving him for their next games,” said Black.
“Fajardo is a very good player. I’ve coached against him for the fourth time and he has played very well in those games,” said Black.
The scores:
Ateneo 100 – Slaughter 18, Salva 18, Erram 13, Ravena 12, Gonzaga 10, Long 7, Chua 6, Austria 6, Tiongson 4, Capacio 3, Golla 2, Pessumal 1, Estrada 0, Sumalinog 0, Cipriano 0
