Greg Slaughter isn’t about to make the big jump to the Philippine Basketball Association just yet.
The seven-foot center has committed to play for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP for one more year and help the school in its quest for a fifth straight title.
Ateneo coach Norman Black confirmed the news to InterAKTV.
“He will be back to play for us next year. He still has one year of playing eligibility,” Black said in an exclusive interview on Tuesday night.
Black said Slaughter bolsters the chances of the Blue Eagles to win another title.
“Definitely, we will be a much stronger team with Greg around,” said Black, who also coached Slaughter along with fellow Ateneo stars Kiefer Ravena, Emman Monfort, and Nico Salva in the Sinag Pilipinas national team that won the gold medal in the last month’s Southeast Asian Games basketball tournament.
Slaughter transferred to Ateneo in 2009 after three seasons with the University of the Visayas Green Lancers. His move came after a stint with the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, where he backed up naturalized center Marcus Douthit.
Slaughter would have been a strong candidate to become the top overall pick in next year’s PBA draft, with other members of SMART-Gilas already having joined the league this year.
