“Next to corruption and coup d’etat, basketball is the national sport. And you can’t sponsor corruption or coup d’etat.”
– JB Baylon on why Powerade decided to sponsor the national squad in 2009
Powerade top executive JB Baylon joins InterAKTV’s Jaemark Tordecilla in the second episode of the Overtime podcast, where they discuss the Tigers’ fairy tale run, and how the players were transformed by their victory over B-MEG in the quarterfinals. Baylon also candidly answers why he didn’t fire Powerade coach Bo Perasol even when the team was struggling, and why he was OK with the decision to trade marquee players like Asi Taulava and Alex Cabagnot.
Baylon also discusses his experience as the manager for Powerade Team Pilipinas in the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship, how that team of PBA stars compares to the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas squad, and why the PBA cannot afford not to lend its players to the national team.
