THIS early, former Far Eastern University star Aldrech Ramos has expressed his desire to turn pro by joining this year’s annual PBA Rookie Draft.
"Talagang plano ko ng mag-pa-draft ngayong taon," Ramos, 22, said after the AirAsia Philippine Patriots trounced the Chang-Thailand Slammers 81-72 last Saturday in the Asean Basketball League at the Thai-Japanese Association Gym in Bangkok, Thailand.
Regarded as one of the finest big men in the country today, after Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter and Cebu native Junmar Fajardo, the slender Ramos said he continues to boost his stock, adding some weight and improving his already reliable offensive arsenal.
Syempre andun pa rin ‘yung pag-i-improve ng aking laro offensively," stressed the 6-foot-6 Ramos, who boasts a feathery touch from the outside, especially from the flanks.
Fresh from a productive five-year collegiate stint with the Tamaraws, whom he helped gain back-to-back finals appearances in the UAAP, Ramos sees the ABL will only help him develop as a better player.
Against the Slammers, Ramos posted six points and had two boards in 15 minutes of action but his ability to stretch their opponent’s defense with his perimeter shooting augurs well for the Patriots, who lead the fledging regional league with a 6-1 card.
Kaya malaking bagay para sa team ang shooting niya sa labas," said Patriots assistant coach Johnedel Cardel, a former pro who had stints with Alaska and defunct teams Shell and Sta. Lucia.
If he would have his way, Ramos intends to play for either San Miguel (now Petron Blaze) or sister team Ginebra.
Before turning pro, however, Ramos remained focus on the task at hand.
