STIFLING Gary David is proving to be one herculean task in the PBA Governors Cup.
The prolific guard helped stretch Powerade's run while continuing his own amazing streak to get the unanimous nod as the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period June 4 to 10.
It was the second straight such citation for David and he made it a no-brainer decision after scattering 30 points in the Tigers' 104-98 victory over erstwhile unbeaten Rain or Shine last Friday.
The win was Powerade's third straight after starting the season-ending tourney with back-to-back losses.
Import Omar Sneed lent a big hand with 24 points and 20 rebounds, but it was David's latest explosion that tickled the most.
It was the 19th straight game where David has scored at least 20 points, a run that started in Game Two of the 2011-12 Philippine Cup Finals against Talk ‘N Text, tying Danny Seigle’s feat with San Miguel Beer in the 2006 Philippine Cup.
It was also David’s 18th game this season with at least 30 points.
Powerade coach Bo Perasol could not be more pleased for his main man. "Gary is just persistent," he said. "He may be shut down for a quarter, but you must be ready for his comeback."
David did go scoreless in the second quarter of that game. But he went on to scatter 19 points in the second half, including 11 in the payoff period. In all, he went 9-for-24 from the field, a perfect 10-for-10 from the stripe and also had five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
As is his wont, David prefers to share the credit with his teammates. "Napakalaking tulong nila sa akin dahil sila ang nagbibigay ng screens, picks. At sila din ang humahanap sa akin, ibinibigay sa akin ang bola kung saan mas malaki ang tsansa na maka-score ako," he stated.
The Dinalupihan, Bataan, native's latest performance jacked his conference average to 28.0 points per game, second only to Air21 import Zach Graham’s 35.3 ppg in the tournament.
And David sustaining his current pace should only spell more success for Powerade. (NC)
