With Chris Tiu, one of the most popular basketball players in the country, announcing his intention to finally turn pro, even PBA commissioner Chito Salud is taking notice.

In a short statement on Friday, Salud expressed his admiration for the former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas team captain, and said he is “interested” to see Tiu in the PBA.

“We all know Chris (Tiu) compared to others is not one that jumps the highest, runs the fastest, shoots the best,” Salud said.

“And yet he comes out again and again as the leader of his team, be it in his collegiate days and then during his stint in the national team.

“That is what he brings to the table: leadership, smarts, maximizing one’s God-given talent, standing over and above the rest not thru sheer skills but because of his desire to shine and be a difference maker.

“But he is now in the big league, so I am interested to see how he will fare against the nation’s best basketball professionals.”

Tiu announced his decision to turn pro on Friday, ending months of speculation about his basketball future. “I’m excited. I hope I will be given the opportunity to play to whichever team needs me,” he said.
