Draft day surprise: Ginebra, B-MEG pass on Chris Tiu

    Post  supr3mo on Sun Aug 19, 2012 8:24 pm

Ginebra fans at Robinsons Midtown Manila began to scream in anticipation when PBA commissioner Chito Salud began to announce the team’s draft pick at No. 6: “Barangay Ginebra San Miguel selects Chris…”

The diehards inside the mall were expecting their favorite team to pick the popular Chris Tiu. Instead, in a letdown, the squad selected a different Chris altogether: Chris Ellis.

Before the draft, Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen expressed his interest in picking Tiu. “I hope Chris Tiu will still be available,” Tanquingcen told InterAKTV last Thursday, adding that he was hoping to get a guard to boost the squad.

Ginebra did end up with guards, but none of them were surnamed Tiu. The team drafted six players: Ellis, Keith Jensen, and point guards Jerick Canada, Paul Zamar, JR Buensuceso, and Elliot Tan.

Management and staff of Ginebra neither entertained phone calls nor replied from text message inquiries from InterAKTV after the draft.

    B-MEG, too

But Ginebra was not the only crowd favorite to pass on Tiu. B-MEG actually had a shot at picking Chris Tiu because it eventually traded for the No. 5 pick in the draft, one spot ahead of Ginebra.

Instead, the Llamados ended up with Aldrech Ramos, a sweet-shooting forward who played with Tiu with the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team.

B-MEG coach Tim Cone was more forthcoming in explaining why his team passed on Tiu.

“We already have three point guards on our team,” Cone said, referring to Josh Urbiztondo, Jonas Villanueva, and Mark Barroca. The American coach said that Tiu would have been an option for them if they had moved one of their point guards.

But Cone added that he was happy with the Ramos pick.

“When he was with Gilas, he would always kill us when we played them,” said Cone. “We saw him in two scrimmages before the draft and we were impressed. He could stretch the floor and he could rebound, even though he’s thin.”

Cone added that getting young up front was a priority for the Llamados.

“Rafi [Reavis] is 35, Yancy [De Ocampo] is 32. They’re getting up there (in age),” said Cone. The Llamados drafted big men Ramos, Jewel Ponferrada, and Gian Chiu before taking guard Ramon Mabayo in the fourth round.

But if there’s a team that’s happy with the decisions of B-MEG and Ginebra, it’s Rain or Shine, who happily took Tiu with the seventh overall pick.

“After the draft, people are not talking about the No. 1 or No. 2 pick,” said Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao. “People are talking about Chris Tiu.”

I can't understand above. Diba wala na talaga pag asa ang Bmeg picking Chris Tiu kahit na nag trade pa sila for 5th pick, since after Ginebra pass on Chris Tiu, it was ROS turn to pick in which they eventually grabbed Tiu?

Ibigsabhin lang pwede nila i pa pick sa 5th si Tiu kasi nga may usapan na sila e diba available pa si TIU sa 5th pick sana..

At least with Chris Tiu in a non-SMC team, he could be join Gilas again. This will make Rain or Shine cope until Paul Lee fully recovers. Plus- in sya sa mga ibang chinoy names - Tiu, Chan, Tang, Guiao, &Hao.

    Another Championship coming up!

I think this is just PBA's way to hype and help RoS. Para naman dumami ang teams na maraming fans sa PBA. It goes along with the tagline "Kampihan na". Kumbaga, palakasin ang market ng RoS.

Parang Norwood din laro nyan, investment ng ROS for trade option, before the draft sinabi n ni Yeng GUiao willing silang ibigay via trade.
    Pag TIU Tiumpionship agad?

One of the big winners of the draft is Rain or Shine. They certainly didn't expect that they will land Chris Tiu at 7th. Napaganda pa dahil injured nga si Paul Lee at mapupunan ni Chris ang puwang na yun sa team nila. I don't know what Siot Tangquincen is thinking when he chose Chris Ellis over Tiu. Siguro ayaw na nya makuryente sa pagpili ng player based on need over talent gaya ng Eman over Reyes o di kaya Cervantes over Ababou. So instead of picking Tiu who can plug their need of a playmaker, they instead drafted 2 players with almost similar brand of play with positions wherein they are already stacked. Ang kagandahan lang...talented ang mga players na nakuha ng GSM so kung sakaling hindi mag-work ang experiment ni Siot...pwede pa rin silang i-trade.

Maidagdag ko lang...Ginebra skipped Tiu in the 1st round but on their successive picks after...they chose 4 PGs - Canada, Zamar, Buensuceso and Tan. Overkill?

tulad ng sabi ni Mod lofee, malaking tulong si Tiu sa RoS filling up the spot na maiiwan ni Lee for the mean time..it is just iba lang siguro ang nasa isip ng BGK at BMeg coaches by that time compared sa expectations ng mga fans..

In other words, it's BGK's least priority. Pampuno na lang kumbaga.

I think part of the reason why no SMC team picked on Tiu is because they know he'll probably only play max 3 to 4 seasons in the PBA. If I were either coaches (ST or TC), I wouldn't really draft him as well.

the question is, is national team coach chot interested on him?kya nga hindi nagpa-draft yan last year because he wants to play for the national team.i dont think na magpapa-draft yan kung nppsma sya sa jones cup.

Main reason maybe is that smc teams wants to be sure with their pick. At this moment QUESTIONABLE yun dedication and loyalty nya sa team na mppntahan nya. He is an actor, model, businessman, etc...paano niya maibubuhos yung 100<% nya sa pba kung dmi nya extra currcular actvties. Being a professional is not enough lalo na alam mo mdmi kang fall back good thing napunta siya sa team ng best friend nya.

Maganda yan para sa ROS. Instant endorser! Hehehe! Mas makikilala yung brand nyo at the same time dagdag pondo yan para mag-stay kayo ng matagal sa PBA.

haha. di na pinahalagahan ang talent, mas mahalahga ang audience impact na madadala ni tiu sa RoS, ingame and sa pag indorse.

I think kaya nag pass sa ginebra kay tiu is because, over talent mas lamang talaga si ellis, kita naman ng ang target ng ginebra for the 6th pick is a athletic combo guard, i reAlly think target nila for 6th pick si mallari at ellis, kaya nagbanggit si siot na if ever available pa si tiu at 6th kasi alam nya nasa top 5 for sure ung target nila sila ellis at mallari. Pero since andun pa for 6th si ellis kaya niskip nila si tiu..

And also i think, ginebra hopes maybe na ros will pick at 7th a big man, At aabutin pa nila si tiu at 8th un ang gamble nila. Pero since ros might think tiu is a fan drawer they choose him over there needs.

Logically tlg option ng ginebra is a combo athletic guard, for the 6th pick. Un ang target tlg ng mga smc team, since pba team who is successfully in pba has a very good combo guard. And of course tiu is already 27 why not invest to a 23yrz old guy who has all the skills in basketball and fmas would love to see do highlight reels. Beside sikat n naman ginebra eh, dami na ng fans..
