    JRU eyes Meneses as coach

    By JONAS TERRADO (Manila Bulletin)

Coaches Pido Jarencio of the University of Santo Tomas and Manny Dandan of National University became the second and third college coaches fired by their respective schools the last two days in preparation for next season’s basketball wars.

Some reports, however, said that Jarencio is being eyed to replace Dandan at NU.

    AROUND THE LEAGUE
    By Sid Ventura

Now that Ateneo has wrapped up its double back-to-back feat in the seniors and juniors division and Adamson has regained the women’s crown, let’s take a look again at the top 5 stories of UAAP basketball in Season 72.

    5. Oh Romeo, my Romeo. On August 18, 2009, FEU-FERN’s Terrence Romeo singlehandedly outscored the entire UPIS team, 83-55, to lead the Baby Tams to a 49-point win. The flashy guard set a record of sorts by scoring all of his team’s 33 points in the third period. (Seriously, he really did that.) Later, he said he could have...

MY esteemed BusinessMirror colleague Rick Olivares blogged a beautiful piece on the reign of the Blue Eagles in the collegiate league in the ’80s recently. He called it “The Last Great Blue Dynasty, Part 1.” (You can read all about it at http://networkedblogs.com/p14433708.)

I remember ‘em days, I told him. Because I was a true-blue Eagle fan.

“That was an incredible time for basketball with none of this showbiz crap that follows the teams nowadays,” he answered....

Back in 1987, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and University of the East (UE) figured in the UAAP Finals for the first time. ADMU was in its ninth year in the league and had yet to win a UAAP title. UE, on the other hand, was in its 35th season and has already won a league-record 18 titles.

Last Thursday, in Game 3 of this season’s UAAP Finals between Ateneo and UE, two players from the 1987 championship game, Danny Francisco and Boysie Zamar, met each other on the court again after 22 long years. But this time around, they were not...

The Blue Eagles executed their game plan to the letter to post a 71-58 victory over University of the East Red Warriors in Game Three and run away with the 72nd UAAP men’s basketball crown on Thursday.

The Blue Eagles outrebounded, outshustled and outsmarted the Warriors in the deciding game before 18, 851 paying fans at the Araneta Coliseum.

MANILA, Philippines - Losing by a rout in a game it was fancied to win is no big deal for Ateneo coach Norman Black, who remains confident of the Eagles’ title retention bid in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Ateneo was supposed to march effortlessly to its second straight championship Sunday. Instead, the Blue Eagles appear to be on the ropes, their confidence shaken and their title hopes hanging by a thread.

This was after the University of the East Red Warriors, a team that was considered just a blip in Ateneo’s expected march to the crown, put on a grandiose performance Sunday that shocked even the unflappable Norman Black.

UE’s win, an 88-68 shellacking of the Blue Eagles, silenced the boisterous Ateneo crowd and handed the Red Warriors the momentum in the third game of their...

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and television network ABS-CBN renewed their partnership with a fresh five-year contract starting next year. Gabby Lopez, chairman of the giant network, and Anton Montinola, the league’s president, formally signed the contract, which will run starting Season 73 in 2010 until Season 77 in 2015.

ABS-CBN is bringing the games to the television set of viewers in high definition (HD)—a digital television broadcasting with higher resolution than the standard television system.

The calamity that has struck National Capital Region has pushed back all major sporting events for the more urgent needs of our affected countrymen. But no typhoon is going to dampen the fires stoked for the UAAP Finals, what with so many great stories blooming.
